“The meeting of two individuals is like the contact of two chemical substances: If there is a reaction, both are transformed.” Carl Jung.
As a former world-class athlete and corporate executive, I have had the privilege of working with some incredibly masterful coaches. To live, work, grow, and simply be in the presence of a masterful coach is a truly extraordinary experience. These coaches had a profound impact on my development as a human being and fueled my interest in working with leaders to accelerate their own development. The influence that these coaches had on me can best be described as transformational.
Hopefully, you’ve had the experience of working with a coach (a parent, grandparent, teacher, sports coach, mentor, or manager) who enabled you to reach higher, dig deeper, and ultimately succeed at challenges that initially felt impossible to you. If so, who was this person? What lessons did you learn from this coach? How have you applied these lessons to your work as a leader to pull the very best from your people and enable them to achieve “unthinkable” results? And, how can you improve your ability to inspire and enable your people to reach even higher and dig even deeper to reach new levels of success?
Sadly, I find that many people, including many leaders, have not had the experience of working with a masterful coach. Without a role model to refer to, or a personal experience to rely upon, these leaders are disadvantaged. Without this experience, can they learn how to become masterful coaches? If so, what does it take? Is it worth the investment of time to do?
Over the next few weeks, I will share what I have learned from own experience working with masterful coaches. And, I will also share the results of a research project (my doctoral dissertation) that focused on what differentiates good coaches from masterful coaches.
The good news is that much of masterful coaching can be learned. That said, masterful coaching requires that you go beyond learning coaching skills. Join us for the conversation!
